THE THIRD SAKURA MEETING
Geography and Culture on the Habur and Euphrates

The Research Center for West Asian Civilization hosted the Third Sakura Meeting on Geography and Culture on Habur and the Euphrates at the Tsukuba International Congress Center on October 9 and 10. The Sakura meeting series is an initiative of the University of Tsukuba and CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique), Paris and is funded by a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science grant.

On the first day participants at the meeting revised and discussed issues related to translation and interpretation of cuneiform tablets recovered through archaeological excavation of Emar (Tell Meksene), located on the great bend of the Middle Euphrates in north eastern Syria.

The second days presentation and discussion concerned cuneiform texts recovered from Mari (Tell Al-Hariri) and Tabutum (Tell Taban), Old Babylonian and Middle Asyrian sites respectively. Invited speakers included J-M Durand (College de France), L Marti (CNRS), N Ziegler (CNRS) and D Charpin (University of Paris, Sorbonne).

The fourth and last Sakura project meeting will be held in Paris in early 2011.

Lecture by Josef Kanjou

On November 8, 2010 the Research Center for West Asian Civilization invited Dr. Joseph Kanjou from the Aleppo National Museum of the Syrian Arab Republic to give a presentation to students and graduate students at the University of Tsukuba as part of the center’s ongoing Education program.

Dr. Kanjou talked about research being undertaken at Tell al-Qaramel including the burial sites and human remains that have been uncovered from this site. This included descriptions of interesting cases where skulls were removed from corpses during burial rites, analysis of cut marks left on tibia and how information obtained from the site influenced knowledge of Neolithic burial practices in West Asia.

A question and answer session provided students with a valuable opportunity to interact with foreign researchers.
